Esterel Massif

Nestled in the South of France, the Massif de l’Esterel is a hidden gem many tourists have yet to explore. During my one-week trip along the French Riviera, I had the chance to experience this breathtaking place firsthand. Unlike the crowded streets of Cannes and Frejus, this area offers an escape into nature, where the views blew me away. The unusual coastline, sculpted by time and nature, boasts striking red rocks and untouched wild landscapes, making it an unforgettable destination. The Esterel Massif is known for its unique volcanic origin, which gives the soil, hills, and cliffs their fiery red color. I found rocky beaches, secluded caves, and narrow calanques along its shores, each offering a different side of its rugged beauty. Whether hiking the winding trails or taking in the scenery from the coast, every step reveals something spectacular. The region’s highest point, Mont Vinaigre, stands at 614 m, offering panoramic views that are truly unmatched.
A travel guide can help those seeking adventure uncover the best-hidden spots and ensure you don’t miss the region’s highlights. Whether you’re looking to explore on foot or soak in the beauty from afar, this lesser-known side of the French Riviera deserves to be visited and appreciated.

How to get to Esterel Massif?

The easiest way to explore the Massif de l’Esterel is by car, which offers a comfortable journey with free parking at every spot. If you prefer flexibility, you can rent a vehicle to move around at your own pace. While public transport is an option, it won’t allow you to visit all the scenic locations. For those relying on trains, the best stop is Le Trayas, a convenient point to start your adventure. Traveling by sea is another exciting way to reach this breathtaking place. Whether you prefer a yacht, boat, or sailing ship, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. Many travel agencies offer cruises that cover some parts of the coastline, making it easy to experience the region’s stunning beauty from the water. If you love snorkeling and swimming, this route provides a unique perspective of the rugged cliffs and hidden coves.

Those arriving from Cannes have several options to make the trip seamless. You can check with local tour operators for guided routes or plan your itinerary to uncover this extraordinary destination’s untouched charm. However you choose to get there, a trip to the Massif de l’Esterel is a must for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.click

Beautiful rocks formations near Le Trayas

Nestled along the coast, the small town of Le Trayas is a hidden treasure known for its beautiful landscapes. One of its most striking features is the unique rock formations that shape the shoreline, creating breathtaking scenery. As I explored this area, I was mesmerized by how the rugged cliffs met the deep blue waters, offering countless amazing views. Every corner felt like a perfect setting for capturing the beauty of nature.

This place is full of photo spots for photography lovers that make for stunning shots. I took several aerial pictures here, showcasing the contrast between the fiery red cliffs and the turquoise sea. If you enjoy taking photographs, this location is truly a dream, with endless opportunities to capture the essence of the rocky coastline. I even shared some of my best shots in a post, hoping to inspire others to witness this beauty for themselves.

If you plan to walk along the rugged terrain, don’t forget to bring a pair of water shoes, as the ground is rocky everywhere. The uneven surfaces and sharp edges can be harsh on the feet, but with the right gear, exploring this incredible place becomes much more manageable. Whether you’re here for adventure or photography, Le Trayas is a must-visit destination that leaves a lasting impression.

La cabane chez Monique – delicious snack bar

After soaking up the sun all day, we were craving some good food to refuel before continuing our adventure in the Esterel Massif. There weren’t many restaurants in the area, but luckily, we found a small bar along the main road. This cozy snack bar was a perfect stop, offering a delicious selection of dishes made with fresh ingredients.  They served a mix of fresh seafood, fish, quick snacks, and various desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth. I enjoyed a flavorful tuna steak with crispy french fries and a fresh salad, while my travel buddy, Judy (@charmingadventurer), went for a plate of moules with french fries. Every bite was satisfying, making this little roadside gem worth the visit. The owner, Monique, was a warm, kind person who made us feel right at home: her excellent customer service and friendly nature added to the charm of this hidden spot. If you love discovering authentic food while exploring, this place is worth stopping for.
