Mos Espa, one of Tunisia’s most iconic filming locations, is unique because it’s entirely false. Up close, the structures feel like paper mache and aren’t as strong as they appear. When you walk inside, you can see the wood of the set holding everything together. Despite this, seeing and feeling like you’re walking through a Star Wars movie is still incredibly cool.

This set was built entirely for Star Wars and serves no regular function other than attracting tourists. The area surrounds vendors selling dolls, rocks, scarves, and toys. You’ll also find guys offering quad and camel rides, but they can be pretty annoying as they follow you unless you’re very strict with them.

During my visit, one followed me persistently and even pushed me against his sitting camel to take a photo despite my repeated refusals. He only left us alone after my male friend yelled at him. While the experience was sometimes overwhelming, it didn’t remove the magic of standing in a place that feels straight out of Star Wars.

How to get to Mos Espa

Mos Espa is around about 40 minutes northwest of the desert town of Tozeur. You can easily reach it via paved roads; the journey is easy and free. We drove there in our rental car, and a 4×4 is unnecessary to access the site. However, be careful when you arrive at the parking lot. Short grey columns mark the area, but many are broken, fallen over, or missing, confusing it. I accidentally hit one with my rental car because it wasn’t visible from the driver’s side.

Despite the parking challenges, visiting Mos Espa is a must for any Star Wars fan. Its unique location and connection to the films make it a memorable stop on your Tunisian adventure.

The Sidi Bouhlel Ravine is located about 30 minutes outside the town of Tozeur. Once you arrive, please park in the parking lot (it’s significant) and walk into the canyon on the left. You’ll need a car to get here, but if you don’t have a rental car, you can hire a taxi in Tozeur to take you. Just make sure the driver waits for you to go back.

This location, also known as Djebel Sidi Bouhlel, is a must-visit for Star Wars fans. Its dramatic landscapes and cinematic history make it a highlight of any trip to Tunisia.

The Mides Oasis area feels like a big park, with a single entrance down a dirt road. You’ll find a few shops near the parking area, a small cafe, and a primitive bathroom that costs 1 TND. You can hire a guide or walk around the area alone.

The large areas are filled with palm trees and date trees, which seem privately owned, with men working in these plots. To the left of the palm tree gardens, you’ll discover the canyon, which is incredibly beautiful and massive. You can follow the path parallel to the canyon, passing cafes, lookout points, and men selling rocks and Toureg jewelry.

How to get to Mides Oasis

The Mides Oasis is the last stop before the border with Algeria, making it a unique destination. The simplest way to reach is by renting a car..  Drive one hour north from Tozeur along the P16 highway, and you’ll run into it. Plenty of signs mark the way to the entrance so you won’t get lost.

Once you arrive, you’ll need to drive along a narrow dirt road for a couple of minutes until you reach the parking area. While the parking area isn’t big, it’s usually not crowded, so you shouldn’t have difficulty finding parking.

Chebika is a beautiful place that almost feels fake because of its stunning beauty. From the parking lot, you can take a giant loop path. If you go to the right, you’ll walk down a path through a palm tree garden and a canyon. While rushing water used to flow through the canyon, it hasn’t rained enough in several years. As you turn a corner, you’ll find a small waterfall and an area where men sell trinkets.

If you keep following the path above the waterfall, you’ll walk along a small river. Eventually, the path becomes very steep, with a first section featuring stairs. You must continue up a dirt path to reach the mountain’s peak. From there, you can see the remnants of the ancient village below, which was abandoned after the floods of 1969.

After taking in the views, follow the path through a narrow passageway between two large rocks. You’ll then descend through the village and eventually return to the parking lot, completing the loop.

How to get to Chebika Oasis

Chebika Oasis is located off Highway P16, around 20 minutes south of Mides Oasis. As you approach, signs will direct you through the town of Chebika to reach the oasis. You’ll arrive at a dirt parking lot with plenty of parking spots. If you’d like, you can ask one of the locals to be your guide, or more likely, they’ll ask you first if you need a guide.

What Tamerza Oasis is like now

Tamerza, also seen as Tamaghza on the map, is a small town on the P16 highway between Mides and Chebika Oases. Once home to an ancient village, the area was abandoned after a flood in 1969. Today, the area is dotted with palm trees and date trees, but the main attraction is the small waterfall or cascade on the lower level. While the waterfall is small and underwhelming, you can swim in it if the weather is nice. Nearby, you’ll find a canyon perfect for a leisurely walk.

On the upper level, where you park, shops are selling standard items of the area, like scarves, toys, wood carvings, pottery, and a small cafe. We enjoyed lunch here, trying the Berber pizza and the famous palm juice of the area.

How to get to Tamerza Oasis

When driving on the P16, look for signs that say “Tamaghza Cascade.” A small road will lead you off the highway and downhill to the dirt parking area. It’s obvious where to park, as shops and cafes are nearby. After parking, take a short path leading down into the canyon. Go left to see the canyon or right to see the cascade.

This location includes the Tamaghza Oasis (for the village) and the Grand Falls of Tamaghza (for the canyon and cascade). Both spots are worth exploring for their unique beauty and connection to the Star Wars universe.

The Chott el Djerid is a large salt flat south of Tunisia. On Google Maps, it appears blue and might look like a large lake, but it’s a dry salt flat. A main highway runs through the center of the salt flat, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Off to the sides of the highway, you’ll find kitschy roadside stops with piles of salt. These spots are marked by several flags stuck into the salt piles, and some even feature playful jokes, like a small boat labeled “Titanic” and a small hut called “Hotel.” These quirky touches add charm to this unique and otherworldly destination.

How to get to Lars Homestead (exterior)

The Lars Homestead no longer serves a purpose in any contemporary way, but it remains a popular tourist attraction for Star Wars fans. To find it, head about 30 minutes west of Tozeur along the P3 Highway. You’ll need to pass through the town of Nefta first, then turn off the paved road and drive on a dirt road for a short distance. While a regular sedan is sufficient for this trip, you don’t need a quad or 4×4 truck.

This location, near Chott el-Djerid, is a must-visit for fans wanting to see the iconic Lars Homestead up close. The journey is straightforward and offers a chance to explore the stunning desert landscapes that inspired the Star Wars universe.

The day was rainy and windy when we visited, but we had the place to ourselves. The only other person there worked at the small cafe and had a bathroom available. This was the first Berber grain storage area we had seen in Tunisia, and we were in awe. Seeing and offering a unique glimpse into the region’s history is remarkable.

How to get to Ksar Hallouf

We stopped at Ksar Hallouf on our way from Tozeur to Tatouine, and it was just 5 minutes out of the way from the main road. To reach it, pass through the town of the same name and continue on the path until you see the structures on the top of the hill. Drive up the mountain until the end, where several parking spots are available.

This location is easy to access and offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Ksar Hallouf. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or a history enthusiast, it’s a quick and worthwhile detour.

The area is significant, with the front area fully renovated and the back area more primitive. It’s worth a visit for any Star Wars fan.
