Nestled in the Central Pacific, Oahu is the heart of the Hawaiian chain, blending bustling city life with natural beauty galore. How to get to Oahu?
Traveling to Oahu is straightforward, with numerous flights from California cities like San Francisco to Honolulu. Airlines such as Alaska Airlines offer round-trip options, with fares often between $200 and $250. For instance, I once visited in May and secured a round-trip ticket for $220, plus a $30 fee for a check-in bag. When you find such deals, it’s wise to book promptly.

How to get from Honolulu Airport to Waikiki?
Upon arriving at Honolulu Airport, travelers have several options to reach Waikiki. While car rentals are available, it’s noteworthy that airport locations often have higher prices compared to other city locations. For a cost-effective alternative, consider TheBus service—bus number 20 offers direct routes to Waikiki, with tickets priced at $2.75 per person. Remember to carry cash to pay the driver upon entrance. However, be aware that TheBus restricts luggage, typically only allowing items like a large purse or backpack. yestohawaii.com
If you have more luggage or prefer a quicker journey, ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft and taxis are readily available. These options generally cost between $40 and $50 per ride. Alternatively, shuttle services like SpeediShuttle provide convenient transportation from the airport to Waikiki. For instance, Fly Shuttle & Tours offers services starting at $21.99 per person. flyshuttlehawaii.com
Given these choices, I often recommend the bus for solo travelers with minimal luggage and ride-sharing or shuttle services for those seeking more comfort or carrying additional bags.

Where to stay in Oahu?
Waikiki/Honolulu
Waikiki, located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, is a vibrant neighborhood known for its lively atmosphere and beautiful beaches. During my second visit, I stayed at the White Sands Hotel, a recently renovated boutique establishment that exudes a retro Hawaiian vibe. Unlike the towering skyscraper hotels, this place offered a unique and intimate experience, complete with a charming bar that became my favorite spot for a drink after a day of adventures.
While Waikiki is undeniably appealing, it can become crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. On my first visit, I found it challenging to find a spot on the beach due to the influx of tourists. However, the energetic vibe and various restaurants and entertainment options make it a great place to enjoy dinner and nightlife.
For those looking to explore beyond Waikiki, renting a car is advisable. This allows you to discover other parts of the island, such as the North Shore and the East Coast, each offering a different vibe. Splitting your time between these areas provides a more authentic and less touristy experience. One of my favorite places to stay in the past was the Hilton Hawaiian Village, a true resort destination boasting the most expansive stretch of beach, a serene lagoon, and five pools. Its central location offers easy access to fun attractions like the International Market Place, Honolulu Zoo, Diamond Head, and the shopping haven of Kalakaua Avenue.

North Shore
The North Shore of Oahu offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling Waikiki, bringing visitors closer to the island’s stunning beaches on the West side. To fully experience this area, you’ll need a car to explore and stay at various hotels or Airbnb. We recommend booking accommodations in this laidback region, which attracts surfers from around the globe with its 7-mile stretch of world-class surf breaks and Hawaiian country vibes. This area, known as the Seven Mile Miracle, is legendary in surfing and hosts impressive competitions. During the summer, when the surf subsides, the area is excellent for swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing on its pristine beaches. Haleiwa’s charming, walkable surf town offers local boutiques, surf shops, and restaurants. We suggest consulting a guide to recommend where to eat, stay, and play in this delightful town.
On a personal note, Anush and I recently celebrated 16 years together and chose the newly renovated Turtle Bay Resort for this special occasion. Situated about an hour from the airport and away from the touristy hotspots of Honolulu, it was exactly what we were looking for. As the only resort on the rugged, untouched North Shore, it spans nearly 1,300 acres of lush, historic land, featuring five miles of unspoiled coastline and twelve miles of breathtaking trails. The massive renovation has resulted in a sprawling, new resort that looks beyond incredible, offering the perfect mix of luxe contemporary design and laidback surf vibes.

The best places to visit on Oahu
Planning a trip to Oahu is an exciting experience, but knowing when to go makes all the difference. The best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for. If you dream of riding the waves, surf season on the North Shore is during the fall and winter months, especially between October and April, when the ocean comes alive. However, summer offers calmer seas if you’re after sandy beaches with crystal-clear water. It’s fascinating how tourism ironically coincides with bad places experiencing extreme weather elsewhere, making Hawaii a year-round destination.
For those avoiding peak prices and hoping for fewer crowds, consider travelling in the lower off-season or shoulder periods. While high year-round tourism keeps the island buzzing, there are different tourist seasons with varying experiences. The best times for budget travellers are when demand dips, leading to better deals. Prices tend to increase during peak vacation periods, so adjusting your one-week itinerary around the broken-down seasons can help maximize your adventure. Whether exploring scenic viewpoints, hiking mountains, or relaxing by a flat lake, the right timing ensures the best experience in Oahu’s diverse areas and favourite spots.

Best beaches on Oahu
Lanikai Beach
One of the most beautiful spots in Oahu, Lanikai Beach, is often listed among the top beaches in the world. With soft white sand and clear blue waters, it’s a perfect escape from busy tourist hubs. While weekends can get crowded, planning a visit on a weekday allows for a more peaceful experience. The area offers free street parking, but respecting privacy and being mindful of nearby residents is essential.
Don’t forget to hike to the Lanikai Pillbox—this is for those who love adventure—the leisurely trail rewards hikers with fantastic ocean views and surrounding landscapes. Exploring the neighbourhood before or after the hike adds to the charm of the visit, offering a glimpse into local island life. Whether you’re here for a quick getaway or an extended stay, Lanikai Beach will quickly become a favourite spot.

Makua Beach
On the island’s west side, a less popular yet gorgeous beach remains a hidden gem for visitors seeking peace and natural beauty. This stretch of coastline is quite long and sandy, offering plenty of space to relax away from the crowds. The beach is surrounded by epic mountains, creating a breathtaking backdrop that makes the experience even more magical. One of the most exciting moments here is when lucky visitors can say they saw sea turtles swimming near shore. Unlike other busy spots on the island, this location offers a quiet escape where nature thrives. Whether you’re soaking in the scenery or simply taking a stroll along the sandy shore, the beauty of this west-side treasure is unforgettable.

Kainoa Beach/Waimanalao Beach
Nestled on the breathtaking island of Oahu, Kainoa Beach and Waimanalo Beach are gorgeous spots that feel like a dream. These beaches are perfect for those seeking peace and beauty, with tall palm trees swaying gently in the breeze. Picture yourself in one of the elegant villas facing the ocean, where you can lay next to the waves and soak in tranquillity. The area is often covered in light clouds, adding a mystical touch, but it’s important to remember that a sunny day will reveal even more of its stunning charm. These Instagrammable beaches offer the perfect backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. Whether strolling along the shore or relaxing under tall palm trees, the scenery feels like a painting. Being part of this serene island escape is an experience like no other.

Lanikaea Beach
If you’re visiting Oahu, don’t miss Lanikaea Beach, a true hidden treasure on the North Shore. Also called Turtle Beach, this spot is famous for its gentle waves and the incredible sight of sea turtles resting on the shore. The golden sand and clear blue waters make it a perfect place to relax and watch the breathtaking sunsets. It’s a peaceful escape where nature feels close, and the sound of waves is calming. Along the coast, you’ll find beautiful houses facing the ocean, adding a touch of charm to the scenery. Whether strolling along the shoreline or just sitting back to enjoy the view, this lovely place offers beauty and serenity.

Waikiki Beach
One of the most popular spots in Oahu, Waikiki Beach, is known for its vibrant energy and stunning views. This busy destination attracts visitors worldwide, offering plenty of exciting activities. Whether you’re into paddle boarding, surfing, or kayaking, the crystal-clear water and gentle waves make it a perfect playground for water sports. Though it can get crowded, the lively atmosphere adds to its charm, making it a must-visit for beach lovers. Spanning over a two-mile stretch, Waikiki Beach is divided into eight sections, each with a unique appeal. The soft white sand is perfect for relaxing under the sun, while the calm waters make it a good spot for swimming. Waikiki offers something for everyone, no matter what kind of beach experience you’re looking for.

Best hikes on Oahu
Diamond Head Crater Hike
The Diamond Head Crater Hike is a must-visit for an unforgettable adventure on the island. This popular trail is 1.6 miles roundtrip and surprisingly easy, making it perfect for beginners. The hike is accessible from Waikiki, and you can reach it by walking or taking a bus to avoid the hassle of parking, which is often packed. The entrance fee is $10 per vehicle or $5 per visitor, and the gates are open from 6 am to 6 pm, with a cutoff time to start at 4.30 pm. We arrived at 4 pm, the perfect time since the trail was nearly empty, making the experience even better. The hike gradually leads you to the top, with incredible views. From the summit, you can take in the breathtaking scenery of Waikiki and the surrounding coastline, making every step worth it.

Pink Pillbox Hike (Pu’u o Hulu)
Located on the east side of Oahu, the Pink Pillbox is a short but rewarding hike that offers some of the most breathtaking views on the island. The trail is surrounded by beautiful mountains and scenic vistas, making every step an experience to remember. Though the path follows a narrow ridge, the journey up the hill is worth the effort, especially for those who enjoy a challenge. The hike takes about 45 minutes to reach the top, but be prepared for a steep incline that makes it feel moderate rather than easy. Many hikers go during sunset when the golden light transforms the landscape into magical. If you’re looking for a scenic and adventurous trail, this one should be on your list!

Koko Head Crater Hike
For those looking for a challenge, the Koko Head hike is one of the island’s most steep and challenging trails. It requires endurance with no shade and an exposed path, but the effort is rewarding. The journey involves climbing 1048 steps, which were once part of old railroad tracks used by the military. The 1.6-mile out-and-back trail takes about 45 minutes, though taking breaks along the way is recommended. Reaching the top of the crater is an achievement, with breathtaking views making every step worth it. Many hikers prefer to go early in the morning to avoid the heat or just before sunset for a remarkable experience. Whether you want to test your limits or enjoy one of Oahu’s most scenic spots, this hike is unforgettable.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike
The Lanikai Pillbox Hike is one of my favourite trails on Oahu. It offers some of the most picturesque landscapes on the island. This short yet exciting hike takes you along a narrow path, leading to breathtaking views of Lanikai Beach and beyond. If you plan wisely, you can visit both the beach and the trail in one day, making for an unforgettable adventure. Reaching the first pillbox takes around 20 minutes, and you can admire the sweeping scenery that makes this hike special. The trail continues further, leading to other pillboxes at the top, each offering the best views of the turquoise waters and lush coastline. The experience is fantastic, making this a must-do for any nature lover.

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden
One of the most beautiful places in Oahu, the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is a must-see attraction on the island. Spanning 400 acres, this lush, tropical escape is filled with breathtaking scenery and peaceful nature trails. The main road leading to the entrance is a famous, Instagram-able spot, offering a picture-perfect view of the green mountains in the back. The garden is open every day from 9 am. to 4 pm, making it easy to plan a visit.
While you can’t take pictures near the gate due to restrictions and the presence of a security guard, there are plenty of scenic areas beyond the signs along the road where you can walk or drive to capture the beauty. If you’re looking to take photos, finding a quieter spot inside is best, as early visitors might still be watching. Though some suggest coming before hours to avoid restrictions, it’s not worth it, as the white signs will still appear in your shots.

Kualoa Ranch
One of the most breathtaking places in Hawaii, Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000-acre nature preserve filled with stunning landscapes and thrilling activities. This must-see destination offers incredible views over three valleys, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Many compare its beauty to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, but some say it’s even more beautiful and less busy, providing a peaceful escape.
What makes Kualoa Ranch even more remarkable is its connection to movies. Many famous films, including Jurassic World and Lost, were filmed here, and visitors can admire the iconic movie backdrops. I loved exploring this place and highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience the cinematic side of Hawaii while enjoying its natural beauty.
