Planning a road trip to Utah is an exciting experience, but preparation is key. The best cities to start your adventure are Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, offering excellent access to the state’s national parks. I drove from Las Vegas and stopped at Zion National Park and the Valley of Fire, which made for an unforgettable journey. To save money, I highly recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful Annual Pass, valid for one year and allowing entry to all national parks for just $80. You can buy the pass at any park entrance, making it a significant investment.

Utah’s weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack a jacket, especially for the mornings, which can be cold. The temperatures tend to change quickly, so bringing a variety of outfits is a brilliant idea. A pair of comfortable shoes is an excellent choice for exploring, as there are many beautiful hikes and breathtaking sights to enjoy. Preparing for different weather conditions will help you make the most of your trip.

Food options can be limited in remote areas, so I suggest taking plenty of snacks. A travel utensil set and a knife can also help prepare quick meals. Utah Road Trip – Day 1-2

Zion National Park

Where to stay?

Starting your Utah Road Trip, drive from Las Vegas through the stunning Valley of Fire before reaching Zion National Park. Staying in Hurricane, a small city just a 30-minute drive from the entrance, is a budget-friendly option, but the lovely town of Springdale is a better choice for a more scenic stay. It offers plenty of hotels, Airbnb accommodations, and excellent access to the park.Arriving early in the morning is the best way to avoid the crowded conditions, especially on a Saturday or during Halloween. Since Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars most of the year, park in the parking lot near the Visitor Center and take the free shuttle bus to explore. The shuttle travels to the end of Zion Scenic Drive, offering access to some of the most beautiful sights in the park.

If you have time, do one of the scenic hikes. Though we only had a day, I highly recommend tackling Angels Landing or The Narrows for an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do them on our trip, but they remain on my must-do list for the next visit!

Zion National Park Highlights:

• The Emerald Pools Hike is a must-do, offering breathtaking views of the Lower, Middle, and Upper pools. This 1.5-hour round trip starts from shuttle stop #5, making it accessible yet rewarding.

Bryce Canyon National Park

After leaving Zion National Park, we arrived in Bryce for the night and prepared for an unforgettable experience. Bryce Canyon quickly became my favourite national park in Utah because of its breathtaking scenery. The towering sandstone hoodoos create a stunning natural amphitheatre with magical shades of orange, pink, and red that glow beautifully under the sunlight.  A visit to Bryce Canyon wouldn’t be complete without watching the sunrise over the hoodoos. That’s why staying near the entrance is so important to catch this incredible moment. The first light of the day transforms the landscape, making it one of the most mesmerizing views in any national park.

The Best Western Plus is excellent for a wonderful stay near Bryce. This hotel offers a cosy atmosphere with exceptional amenities, making it a convenient option for travellers. During the middle of the pandemic, we booked our stay through Booking.com, and the process was seamless. The location is ideal for exploring the nearby landscapes while enjoying a relaxing and comfortable night’s rest. One of the highlights of our stay was the tasty buffet breakfast. Bryce Canyon National Park Highlights:

• Watching the sunrise at Inspiration Point is an unforgettable experience. The canyon’s colours come to life as the first light touches the towering hoodoos. Arriving early ensures a peaceful moment before the crowds gather, making it the perfect way to start the day.
• Stopping at Bryce Point and Rainbow Point offers some of the best panoramic views in the park. Bryce Point provides a breathtaking overlook where you can see the vast amphitheatre of rock formations, while Rainbow Point gives a higher perspective of the canyon’s unique landscape. Both spots are must-visit locations for capturing stunning photographs.
• Take on the Navajo Loop Trail Hike through Wallstreet Loop for an adventure. This scenic trail winds through narrow slot canyons and steep switchbacks, offering a closer look at the impressive rock formations. The hike is challenging, but the views make it worthwhile.

Utah Road Trip – Day 4

Capitol Reef National Park

After exploring Bryce Canyon, we drove North toward Capitol Reef National Park, one of Utah’s least-visited national parks. The journey was incredible, especially while driving along Scenic Byway 12, which offers many picturesque stops. One of the highlights of this route is the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument, a place worth a visit for its unique rock formations and stunning landscapes. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to stop there, but it remains on my list for the next trip. I highly recommend grabbing food to go before heading out, as there are very few stops to eat on the drive. Capitol Reef National Park’s remote nature makes it a peaceful and untouched destination, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and experience Utah’s natural beauty at its best.

If you’re looking for a hotel near Capitol Reef National Park, the small town of Torrey is a great option. It’s located nearby and offers a peaceful atmosphere. During our trip, we found that most restaurants were closed due to COVID-19, but luckily, we came across a cute restaurant, The Pioneer Kitchen, right next to Capitol Reef Resort Hotel. I highly recommend both places to stay and eat, as they offer comfort and convenience for travellers. Before our drive to Moab, we stopped at The Pioneer Kitchen to grab breakfast, which was good. A hearty meal before a long journey is always a wise choice; this spot did not disappoint. If you’re planning your itinerary, include this restaurant for a delicious start to your day.

What you should know before going to Capitol Reef?

Capitol Reef National Park is a vast park with stunning red cliffs, canyons, domes, and breathtaking landscapes. The park is divided into different parts, and while some areas are easy to access, others require special vehicles. If you want to truly explore the park, a 4×4 high-clearance vehicle is the best option. While a regular car can take you to some spots, it won’t allow you to reach the park’s most remote and beautiful locations. I highly recommend renting a jeep to make the most of your visit. With the right vehicle, you can drive to the gorgeous Cathedral Valley and admire the Temple of the Sun and Moon, two of the park’s most iconic landmarks. These areas showcase the raw beauty of Capitol Reef National Park and are well worth the adventure.

Capitol Reef National Park Highlights: 

• Drive the Capitol Reef Scenic Drive – This road takes you through the park’s heart, offering beautiful views of towering cliffs and unique rock formations. If possible, try to go during the golden hour when the soft light makes the landscape even more breathtaking.
• Watching the sunset at Gooseneck Overlook and Sunset Point—These two spots provide incredible canyon views as the sun sets, casting warm hues over the rugged terrain. You won’t want to miss this peaceful and mesmerizing experience.
• Hikes to Hickman Natural Bridge and Cassidy Arch—If you enjoy hiking, these two trails are worth exploring. Hickman Natural Bridge is a moderate hike leading to a stunning rock formation, while Cassidy Arch offers a higher vantage point with rewarding scenery. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to do both, but if you can, add them to your itinerary!
• Visiting Cathedral Valley and the Temple of the Sun and Moon – These remote areas showcase some of the most impressive geological wonders in Capitol Reef National Park. You’ll need a 4×4 vehicle to reach them, but the journey is worth it. The towering rock structures and vast desert landscapes make this an unforgettable stop on your road trip.

Dead Horse State Park & Moab

Where to stay in Moab?

On day 4, we left Capitol Reef National Park early in the morning and headed to Moab. The four-hour drive felt epic, as the landscape changed so dramatically that it looked like we had arrived on a different planet. By the early afternoon, we checked into a beautiful hotel, the Best Western Plus Canyonlands Inn, where we stayed for two nights.

I had booked this stay through Booking.com (here’s the link) and was glad we chose this place. It was located right in the centre of Moab, making it easy to explore the area. The complimentary breakfast was delicious, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfort and convenience during their Utah road trip.

Dead Horse State Park

On our first day in Moab, we drove 45 minutes away to Dead Horse State Park, a wonderful place known for its stunning overlook. The best part of the park is the Dead Horse Point Overlook, a must-see spot at the end of the trail, offering spectacular views. It is located on the Island in the Sky district, the easiest part to access by car and the most visited. Watching the sunset here was an unforgettable experience, with the canyon’s colours glowing as the daylight faded.

Utah Road Trip – Day 6

Arches National Park 

Visiting Arches National Park feels like stepping into another dimension. This picturesque park is genuinely out of this world, filled with different arches and unique rock formations that make it one of the most breathtaking places in Utah. Stunning spots are waiting to be captured everywhere, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. We spent half a day exploring, but I recommend you stay longer. There’s so much more to explore, from famous rock structures to hidden gems that many visitors miss. Whether hiking or driving through, this park guarantees an unforgettable experience.

Hiking to Delicate Arch

After an exciting adventure in Dead Horse State Park, we slept in Moab and woke early to head to Arches National Park before sunrise. This park can get crowded, so arriving as early as possible is highly recommended. We parked our car at Wolfe Ranch parking lot and started hiking towards Delicate Arch, the park’s most famous and iconic arch. The round trip was 4.8 km (3 miles) and took about 1.5 hours. The trail was easy, and reaching the top felt worth it. The best photo lighting is in the morning, making the effort even more rewarding.  After hiking to Delicate Arch, we explored other beautiful parts of the park, including The Windows, Landscape Arch, Balanced Rock, and the Garden of Eden. Each spot had its own unique beauty and charm. Later, we returned to the hotel for some rest before continuing our journey to Canyonlands National Park.

Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands was the last national park we visited in Utah, and it truly blew my mind. This enormous park is divided into three districts—Island in the Sky, The Maze, and The Needles. Each offers a different kind of adventure, but the most visited area is Island in the Sky, known for its incredible overlooks and dramatic landscapes. Some areas require a 4×4 high-clearance vehicle, especially if you want to go deeper into the rugged terrain.

With only a few hours to explore, we focused on Island in the Sky, where we could admire the breathtaking views of the canyons carved by the Green River and Colorado River. The vastness of the landscape and the feeling of standing on the edge of time made this place unforgettable.

Canyonlands National Park Highlights:

• Shafer Canyon Overlook offers incredible views of deep canyons and winding roads below. Standing here, you can truly appreciate the scale of Canyonlands National Park and how nature has shaped the landscape over time.
• Mesa Arch for sunrise or sunset – We made it for sunset, and the colours on the rock were breathtaking. The way the sunlight hits the arch at different times of the day makes this one of the most photogenic locations in the park.
• Watching the sunset from Green River Overlook – Green River Overlook is perfect if you want a peaceful spot to watch the sun go down. The expansive view over the canyons is unforgettable, with layers of rock formations glowing in the fading light.
• Grand View Point Overlook is another incredible viewpoint that offers a similar experience to Green River Overlook. It’s one of the best places to take in the vast beauty of Canyonlands National Park and admire the endless desert landscape stretching toward the horizon.

Utah Road Trip – Day 7

Forest Gump Point & Monument Valley

On our last day in Utah, we began driving towards Page, Arizona, with a special stop at Forest Gump Point. We had planned to explore Monument Valley, but unfortunately, it was closed due to COVID-19. However, we didn’t give up and still made the most of our visit by capturing stunning photos with the iconic background of towering rock formations. The landscape was beautiful, and we enjoyed every moment of standing on this famous highway, which genuinely felt like a scene from a film. It was the cherry on top of our incredible Utah Road Trip.

This spot is easy to find, as it is located on a small hill along the US-163 Scenic near Mexican Hat, UTAH. There is even a sign marking Forest Gump Point, so you shouldn’t miss the chance to stop by and take in the breathtaking view. Whether passing through or making a memorable trip, this is a must-see destination for any traveller.
