Nestled on the northeast coast of Brazil, Cumbuco is a small fisherman’s village that feels like a dream escape. Just an hour’s drive from Fortaleza, this charming town is in Ceará, making it a perfect getaway for those who love tourism and adventure. The beaches here are beautiful, with golden dunes stretching behind the village. If you enjoy water sports, this place is known for kite surfing, drawing thrill-seekers from all over. There are so many things to do, whether relaxing or exploring.
During my recent 3-week vacation, I had the chance to experience what makes Cumbuco genuinely unique. I made sure to go around and find the best places to eat, as the local cuisine is a treat for the senses. I also wrote this travel guide about the best spots and activities. If you love nature and adventure, you’ll be fascinated by the vast waste dunes, which are a signature attraction of the area. I put together this post to share my experience and help you plan your trip—because nothing compares to the magic of this tourist haven.

When is the best time to visit Cumbuco?
Choosing the right season is essential for those who love to kite surf. The best time to visit Cumbuco is between June and December when the constant and intense winds create ideal conditions for beginners and experienced kite surfers. This period is also the high season, attracting travelers worldwide to this popular destination. The weather remains dry, making it even better for outdoor adventures. If you’re looking for perfect conditions, this is the time to plan your trip.
I came to Cumbuco in late October and stayed until mid-November. The winds were still reliable, but they became less trustworthy by the end of November. If you want the best experience, look at the earlier months. The consistency of the wind makes this place a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, and visiting at the right time can ensure an unforgettable adventure.

Where to stay in Cumbuco?
If you want to experience the heart of Cumbuco, it’s best to stay near the main square, where the atmosphere is lively and everything is within reach. This area is built around a busy center, making finding great restaurants, beach bars, and stores easy. Being close to the action means you can enjoy the city’s vibrant life without needing long commutes. I stayed in an Airbnb in Vila Cumbuco and found it to balance comfort and accessibility. For those who prefer more luxury, you can book a more enormous hotel or an all-inclusive resort. These accommodations are spread farther from the center, offering a quieter and more private retreat. Whether you want a lively experience or a peaceful getaway, Cumbuco offers plenty for every traveler.

What to do in Cumbuco?
Spend time on the beach
Spending time on the beautiful, sandy beaches of Cumbuco is an unforgettable experience. This destination is well known among Brazilian tourists, especially during summer when the weather is perfect for a vacation by the ocean. The turquoise, clear waters create an inviting scene, but it’s essential to be aware of the extreme winds and big waves, especially in the afternoon. If you love swimming, the morning is the best time since the waves are lower and the conditions are more suitable. For adventure seekers, kite surfing is a top activity in one of the top places in Brazil for wind sports.
Head to the beach bars and restaurants near Praia de Cumbuco to make your day even better. My favorite drink was coco gelado, iced coconut, a refreshing treat you can buy at almost any store. It’s natural, tastes great, and is perfect for cooling down after a long day in the sun. Don’t forget to try it while enjoying the breathtaking views of Cumbuco’s coastline.

Learn how to kite surf
Cumbuco is one of the world’s best places for kitesurfing, attracting both beginners and experienced kite surfers. The high season brings a lively atmosphere to the village, as surfers from around the world gather at the beach to ride the big waves and enjoy the extreme conditions. The direct winds make this a perfect place to learn, and if you are new to the sport, you will find the best learning spots in Tabuba, Taiba, and Cauipe. These lagoons offer calmer waters, making practicing before heading into the open sea easier.
It can be challenging, especially initially, but the process is enjoyable and rewarding. I started my journey in Taiba, one of my favorite locations, known for its crystal clear waters and surrounding dunes that create a breathtaking backdrop. If you’re looking for the best spots to train and improve your skills, Cumbuco’s center has expert instructors ready to guide you. Whether you prefer freeride or freestyle, this Brazilian kitesurfing paradise will give you an unforgettable adventure.

Rent a buggy
For those seeking adrenaline and adventure, renting a buggy is the best way to explore Cumbuco. Many of the most hidden and adventurous spots are between the dunes, making it impossible to reach them without the right vehicle. A buggy ride costs around 150-200 $R per day, which is worth the price. Most roads and lagoons in the area require a sturdy automobile, so having a buggy allows you to explore the vast landscapes without limits. The real fun begins when you start riding over the soft dunes, feeling the rush of excitement as you navigate the shifting terrain. Exploring Cumbuco this way allows you to reach places many tourists never see. Whether looking for peaceful views or thrilling rides, a buggy adventure is an experience you won’t forget.

Go to Fortaleza for a day trip
Just 45 min away from Cumbuco, the vibrant city of Fortaleza is a perfect place to explore for a day. This destination is full of contrasts, with modern skyscrapers and fancy restaurants on one side and poor districts and favelas on the other. While it’s an enjoyable experience, it’s best to stay in the beachside areas where it’s safe. The city is also known for its beaches and rich culinary scene, making it an exciting getaway. For my first time there, I took a buggy, and for my second trip, I used Uber, which was very cheap, costing around R$60.
One of the best things to do in Fortaleza is to watch the sunset from Praia de Meireles or the nearby Pier, where the view is truly amazing. Later in the evening, I had dinner at the famous restaurant Illa Mare, which I loved. Don’t forget to visit the market to buy souvenirs, including Brazilian nuts and cashews—they make great gifts or snacks to enjoy later.
